Design Notes

This part is a combination of the light-inducible BBa_K1075044 and the toxin mazF (BBa_K1075037, Muñoz-Gómez et al 2004).

azF is a toxin, which is counteracted by its antitoxin MazE. MazF exhibits sequence-specific ribonuclease activity toward single- or double-stranded RNA regions, and the resulting degradation of cellular mRNA causes global translation inhibition. (Zhang et al. 2003)

Source

The origin of the mazEF (chpA) toxin-antitoxin system is the bacteria Escherichia coli. Here it is involved in the cell response to nutritional and antibiotic stresses as well as in bacterial-programmed cell death.
